English as a Second Language (ESL)
St. Philip’s is proud of its students in the ESL Program. These classes are
designed to provide English skills to non-native English speakers, allowing them
to develop skills to more fully participate in the community. We are pleased to
have been recognized once again by ExxonMobil, thanks to our teacher, ExxonMobil
employee Mary Johns, and have received another monetary grant in support of our
ESL program.
The church has been offering free classes to non-native English speakers for the
past seven years. During that time we have had beginning, intermediate and
advanced English classes. Students from all over the world come to these classes
and thoroughly enjoy their time with the teachers and other students. The
studies involve class work, homework, and occasionally a field trip. In the
past, classes have visited restaurants, the Houston Ship Channel and the
advanced class has visited the Houston Bible Museum. Students also have the
opportunity to participate in ongoing activities at St. Philip’s United
Methodist Church such as volunteer work days, worship and independent field
trips with church members. This provides the opportunity for students to
interact with the traditional English-speaking community in a safe,
non-threatening environment. Our students this year came from Argentina, Brazil,
Chile, China, Dominican Republic, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Russia, Taiwan, Vietnam
and others. Our students have ranged in age from 15 to 90!
Thanks to our international students, we have also been able to offer classes
taught by our students. During the past year, we have offered Spanish and
Chinese classes to the community because of the desire of our students to show
their appreciation for the gift of free English classes at SPUMC.
We are proud of our many hard-working students, and we are especially proud of
the teachers and their helpers who give so much of their time and talents to
make this program work.

The class, shown above, has students from Argentina, China,
Korea, Mexico, Russia and Vietnam.
