St. Philip’s has offered free classes to non- and limited English speakers for many years. Over the years, the church has had several levels of English classes taught by many volunteer teachers. Students from all over the world have come to these classes, learned to speak English and thoroughly enjoyed their time with the teachers and other students. The studies have involved class work, homework, and occasionally a field trip. Students also have had the opportunity to participate in ongoing activities at St. Philip’s United Methodist Church such as volunteer work days, worship and independent field trips with church members. These provided opportunities for students to interact with the traditional English-speaking community in a safe, non-threatening environment. Students have come from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Guatemala, India, Iran, Iraq, Ivory Coast, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Morocco, Russia, Syria, Taiwan, Turkey, Ukraine, Vietnam and others. Students have ranged in age from 15 to 90!
The specific ESL classes offered at St. Philip’s United Methodist Church change from year to year. The class will be taught by Maxene on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am – 12pm (noon) in Room 106.
